Windows Vista Sysem restore ineffective?

I have Windows Vista Home Basic. I installed a program yesterday that is now affecting my system. I tried to do a restore, but there is only one restore point available, and it goes back less than 12 hours. How do I get an earlier restore point. XP used to have a calendar from which you could choose a restore point.
