What is the currently accepted explanation of the start of the universe?

The Big Bang is the best model to explain the origin of the visible universe. However, as every scientific model, it is incomplete and has constrains. So new theories that complement and expand the Big Bang are being developed and proposed. Yet, nobody has come up with any competing theory that fits better with the observational evidence than the Big Bang.
